Elderly Man Victim of Distraction Burglary in Basildon, Essex

An elderly man has become the victim of a distraction burglary in Basildon, Essex. An 84 year old man was the victim of distraction burglary when a man visited his home in Great Gregorie, Basildon, Essex on 30th October 2018 claiming to be there to carry out work on his fence.

Whilst the victim was in his garden with the man, two other men went inside his house and stole a safe, which contained jewellery and documents. The vulnerable victim was targeted for this particular crime and was left very distressed.

Most people who call at your home will be genuine but it’s important to be on your guard and remember there are bogus callers around. Always check the caller is who they say they are before letting them in and remember not to leave doors open and unattended.

If you’re not sure who is at your door, don’t open it. Check the identity of the caller by calling the company they are claiming to be from i.e. gas, electricity, water and police. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider – Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller – they may be bogus.
